Ezekiel 24:16Sefaria

A deeply personal and devastating prophecy is directed at Ezekiel, warning of a sudden tragedy about to strike his home. God informs the prophet that He will take away the person most dear and beloved to him—his wife This private loss is designed to serve as a profound national symbol. His wife represents the Temple, which is the beloved centerpiece of the Israelites, and her death points directly to its approaching destruction

The intimate nature of this loss is emphasized, highlighting that the death of a wife is first and foremost a deeply personal loss to her husband. From a mystical perspective, Ezekiel's soul was rooted in the biblical figure of Cain, and the death of his wife served as a spiritual repair for the ancient sin of Cain killing Abel over an additional twin sister [חומת אנך]. The death itself will occur through a sudden strike. Rather than a widespread illness, this refers to a completely unexpected passing with no prior sickness This suddenness is meant to mirror the absolute shock that will paralyze the Israelites when the Temple is destroyed in an instant.

Despite the overwhelming personal disaster, God commands the prophet to suppress all outward signs of mourning. He is forbidden from delivering a eulogy, crying, or even allowing a single tear to fall down his cheek. No matter how immense his internal heartbreak might be, he must completely conceal his grief and show no emotion This unusual restriction is not just a personal test but a living example for the Israelites. When their own disaster finally arrives, the sheer magnitude of their troubles and trauma will plunge them into a state of emotional numbness, leaving them completely unable to mourn or cry over their own destruction [רד״ק].
