Ezekiel 24:12Sefaria

Deep, rooted moral corruption can reach a point where it resembles a cooking pot entirely encrusted with stubborn filth. When ordinary attempts at cleaning and repair fail, severe suffering becomes the only remaining method to eradicate the impurity.

The primary approach among commentators is that the city has completely exhausted itself through a constant cycle of lies, deceit, and false accusations In this state of moral decay, the city drains its energy by constantly inventing excuses to defend its corrupt behavior [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This exhaustion extends beyond the perpetrators, as the city's fraudulent schemes deeply drain and oppress its poorest residents [רש״י]. Conversely, another perspective views this exhaustion not as the result of deceit, but of deep sadness and grief. In this view, the pot itself is worn out from the agonizing, unsuccessful struggle to melt away the impurity from within [מלבי״ם].

The sheer volume of this filth creates a hopeless reality [מצודת ציון]. The contamination, which represents the city's sins and its wicked inhabitants, is so massive and deeply baked into the pot that it simply cannot be scrubbed away. This reflects a people who stubbornly refuse to repent and change their ways

Because the impurity will not fade on its own, a drastic solution is required. The only way to cleanse the sins and eliminate the wicked is through the fire of destruction, which must burn both the filth and the pot together Yet, the contamination is so overwhelming that even this punishing fire struggles to take control and completely wipe out the wicked [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, the destructive fire can be understood not as literal flames, but as a deep rot, highlighting the overwhelming stench of the city's decay [מלבי״ם].
