יחזקאל, פרק כ״ד, פסוק י״ד

Ezekiel 24:14Sefaria

אֲנִ֨י יְהֹוָ֤ה דִּבַּ֙רְתִּי֙ בָּאָ֣ה וְעָשִׂ֔יתִי לֹא־אֶפְרַ֥ע וְלֹא־אָח֖וּס וְלֹ֣א אֶנָּחֵ֑ם כִּדְרָכַ֤יִךְ וְכַעֲלִילוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ שְׁפָט֔וּךְ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה׃ {פ}

The divine judgment has reached its final, absolute stage of execution, leaving no path for return. The disaster that the people were warned about for many days is now a physical reality, as the king of Babylon has positioned his army against Jerusalem [מצודת דוד]. This unfolding crisis is not a random historical event, but rather the direct execution of God's decree [רד״ק].

Now that the time of destruction has arrived, God makes it clear that there will be no leniency in the punishment [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that God has no intention of canceling or voiding the decree. He will not step back from His decision [רד״ק], nor will He step in to pay the debt of the Israelites on their behalf [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, God will show no pity, and He will not change His mind to turn the impending disaster into something good.

There is a precise parallel between the stages of God's action and His refusal to show leniency. First, because God spoke the decree, it will not be canceled. Second, as the decree arrives, He will show no pity. Pity sometimes stems from needing someone or something, but since God has no need for the people, He will not spare them. Finally, once the action is carried out, there will be no regret after the fact [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, the final sentence is sealed, with the punishment matching the lifestyle and actions of the people exactly. The Chaldean nation and the other foreign armies marching against Jerusalem are not acting independently; rather, they serve as God's messengers and judges, physically carrying out the divine sentence against the city [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].
