The fall of Jerusalem marks a dramatic turning point not only for the nation but for the life of the prophet. After years of facing public disrespect and enduring divine restrictions on his speech, his reality is about to transform. A message that was once met with apathy will soon receive complete recognition, moving his mission into a completely new phase.

The primary approach among commentators is that until the city's destruction, the prophet lived under a decree of partial muteness. He was permitted to deliver divine messages only from time to time. Between these moments of revelation, he was unable to speak like an ordinary person or freely correct the people. For their part, the people treated his warnings with complacency and indifference. They assumed any disaster was a distant threat, meant only for future generations [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This dynamic shifts entirely with the arrival of a survivor bringing news of the ruin. Once it becomes undeniable that the harsh warnings have fully come to pass, the prophet's muteness will be lifted. He will regain the ability to speak naturally and offer guidance from his heart. Because his earlier warnings have been proven completely accurate, the people will no longer have any grounds to argue, and they will finally accept his words [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, חומת אנך, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Some note that this restoration of speech actually occurs twelve hours before the survivor even arrives, serving as an early sign from God [מלבי״ם].

A completely different perspective views this moment not merely as a timeline of arriving news, but as a deep spiritual promise. This approach suggests the intention is to comfort the prophet. God assures him that even though the Temple lies in ruins and the Divine Presence has departed, the spirit of prophecy will remain with him. In this light, his restored speech represents a transition toward new, positive messages of comfort, such as the gathering of the exiles, the resurrection of the dead, and the building of a future Temple. Furthermore, the survivor mentioned might not be a human refugee at all. Instead, it may symbolize the pure spirit of prophecy itself, a divine force arriving on the day of destruction to open the prophet's mouth for these grand visions [אברבנאל].

With his previous words fulfilled, the prophet becomes a living wonder to the nation. The people will place their absolute trust in him, treating his guidance with the utmost seriousness, much like one responds to a clear miracle [מצודת דוד, חומת אנך]. Ultimately, this leads to a deep realization among the people. They will come to know God truly, recognizing that the Creator remains completely faithful to His word and fulfills His promises entirely [מצודת דוד, חומת אנך].
