The traders dealt in the finest materials available. There is widespread agreement among commentators that the spices they brought were of the absolute highest quality and prestige. Alongside these premium spices, their commerce also featured precious stones and gold.

The exact nature of how these goods were exchanged is understood in two different ways. The primary approach among commentators is that the southern nations used precious stones and gold ore as direct payment in return for the merchandise they acquired [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, another perspective suggests that this was not a standard payment transaction. Instead, the visiting merchants simply deposited their luxury wares, placing them directly into the local treasuries and storehouses [רד״ק].
