The vast commercial network of Tyre extended far beyond established cities, reaching even the nomadic tribes dwelling deep within the desert. These desert dwellers were Arab nomads [מצודת ציון] and Ishmaelite tribes renowned for raising premium flocks [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. An alternative tradition identifies these trading partners specifically as the leaders of Nebaioth [רד״ק].
Rather than relying on intermediaries, these merchants traveled directly to Tyre to conduct their business [מצודות]. They supplied the city with high-quality livestock intended primarily for internal consumption and food [מלבי״ם]. The animals they delivered were exceptionally fat and carefully selected from the finest available in their native region [מצודת דוד].
The livestock trade consisted of several specific types of premium animals. The primary approach among commentators is that the nomads provided fat sheep, though an alternative tradition suggests they brought oxen, possibly due to a slight variation in ancient manuscripts [רש״י, רד״ק]. Alongside these, the merchants supplied adult sheep [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and male goats [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], rounding out the rich selection of prime livestock brought from the desert pastures.
