Ancient international trade networks relied heavily on importing valuable livestock and specialized military assets from distant lands. Thriving commercial hubs attracted merchants from far off regions, eager to supply cities with unique goods to build their commercial inventories and estates [מלבי״ם]. All of these valuable assets were delivered as merchandise directly to the trading centers [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

Merchants arriving from the region of Beit Togarmah played a crucial role in this exchange. This area was widely recognized as a major center for horse breeding [מצודת דוד], with some identifying it as the land of Germania [רד״ק]. The traders from this region supplied the markets with an array of specialized animals, prominently featuring standard horses alongside mules, which were bred from horses and donkeys [מצודת ציון].

In addition to these animals, the merchants brought highly specialized military imports. There are two primary ways to understand the nature of these specific goods. One approach suggests that these were actual human beings, specifically skilled, brave, and agile horse riders [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Just as common laborers were sold as slaves during that era, the traders from Togarmah sold men possessing advanced military skills who were perfectly suited to serve as a cavalry [רד״ק].

A second perspective argues that these imports were not humans at all, but instead exceptionally fast, beautiful, and high-quality racehorses. According to this view, these elite horses were referred to by a term usually reserved for human riders to emphasize their vast superiority over ordinary horses. This title highlighted their exceptional quality, much like the distinct advantage an armed cavalryman holds over a common person on the battlefield [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
