Massive material success carries a hidden danger, as it can easily breed a dangerous sense of pride that makes a person forget the true source of their abilities. Through immense talent and sharp wisdom in the realm of trade and commerce, a person is able to dramatically elevate their own status [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This intense commercial activity directly results in a massive accumulation of resources. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to gathering vast wealth and physical assets [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. However, this concept can also extend further to represent a broader accumulation of general power and influence [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or even the building of formidable armies and military might [רד״ק].

Surrounded by this newfound abundance and power, the natural consequence follows: the heart swells with arrogance. A sharp rhetorical rebuke is directed at this haughtiness, questioning the very foundation of such pride. Is it truly fitting for someone to become arrogant over wealth gained simply through clever business practices? Ultimately, everything is a gift from the hand of God. Therefore, there is absolutely no justification for anyone to boast about their achievements, acting as though their success is solely the result of their own independent power [מצודת דוד].
