הֶאָמֹ֤ר תֹּאמַר֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אָ֔נִי לִפְנֵ֖י הֹרְגֶ֑ךָ וְאַתָּ֥ה אָדָ֛ם וְלֹא־אֵ֖ל בְּיַ֥ד מְחַלְלֶֽיךָ׃

Facing death exposes the fundamental fragility of human life, instantly shattering any illusions of absolute power or greatness. When confronted with an existential threat, the ultimate test of an arrogant ruler's claims is laid bare. A mocking challenge is presented to someone who previously claimed supreme powers. The question asks whether this person will still try to declare himself to be God while standing directly before his executioners, perhaps hoping to frighten them away.

The very attempt is absurd. As noted by [מצודת דוד] and [ביאור שטיינזלץ], the simple fact that these attackers have the ability to inflict lethal harm is undeniable proof that the victim is merely human. If he truly possessed divine power, no one would be able to touch him. Standing completely helpless before an armed enemy automatically destroys any pretense of divinity [מלבי״ם].

The bitter reality of this moment forces the realization that he is only a mortal man. The primary approach among commentators is that his attackers are simply his murderers, those who will turn a once-powerful ruler into a lifeless corpse [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, [מלבי״ם] points out an additional reality rooted in disgrace and profanity. Beyond just physical death, the sheer humiliation suffered at the hands of these enemies serves as final, undeniable proof of his ordinary human nature. It strips away any remaining aura of elevated status, showing clearly that he holds no divine spirit or power whatsoever.
