יחזקאל, פרק כ״ח, פסוק י״ב

Ezekiel 28:12Sefaria

A lamentation is raised over the king of Tyre, mourning his death and downfall as though they have already taken place. This dirge is directed at a figure who represented the absolute pinnacle of human perfection, wisdom, and beauty [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. According to ancient tradition, this royal identity is rooted in the historical Hiram, the king of Tyre who served as an ally to David and Solomon. Because of his vital assistance in building the Temple, Hiram attained such immense glory that his people eventually elevated him to a divine status, even believing he entered the Garden of Eden alive. Following his reign, the people of Tyre did not appoint an ordinary successor. Instead, they erected a statue in his exact likeness or selected an extraordinarily wise and beautiful individual to serve as his living representation. It is toward this idealized, flawless figure that the prophecy is aimed [מלבי״ם].

The essence of this ruler is defined by an unparalleled, absolute perfection. The primary approach among commentators is that this condition relates to a complete measure of preparation and refinement. The king is viewed as one who has entirely fulfilled his potential, existing as a flawless entity that contains the sum total of all possible wisdom, honor, and wealth. Every aspect of his life and actions is fully realized and brought to its ultimate peak.

While this presents a picture of complete personal refinement, another perspective views his wisdom as an active, creative force. He is so overflowing with intellect that he possesses the ability to shape, stamp, and design any form or pattern in the world around him [רש״י]. Alternatively, this idea of a perfect stamp or seal connects directly back to the historical Hiram. The current ruler, or the statue standing in his place, is compared to an exact, flawless seal. Just as a physical seal perfectly reproduces the image engraved upon it without missing a single detail, this representative figure is an absolutely precise reflection of the original Hiram [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, this royal figure is defined by an all-encompassing completeness. He is endowed with every imaginable beauty, lacking absolutely nothing. This flawless nature is entirely comprehensive, extending equally to his profound intellectual abilities and his striking physical appearance [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
