Ezekiel 40:14Sefaria

The architecture of the Temple gates was defined by immense proportions, designed to inspire awe through their massive scale and precise layout. Prominent among these structures were the heavy doorposts and towering pillars that flanked the various entrances

The primary approach among commentators is that the specified measurement of sixty cubits refers to the extraordinary height of these gate pillars, emphasizing how they soared upward rather than suggesting a total quantity of sixty distinct columns However, another perspective views this measurement as a description of the pillars' length and spatial arrangement. In this view, the columns extended horizontally for sixty cubits beyond the gate chambers to enhance the visual majesty of the complex. A variation of this idea proposes that there were indeed exactly sixty separate pillars, each one cubit wide, arranged at equal intervals [מלבי״ם].

This architectural grandeur was not limited to a single entrance. The primary approach among commentators is that these massive dimensions characterized all the doorposts and courtyard pillars across every gate surrounding the Temple Mount Beyond their size, the design of these entrances involved careful mechanical planning that dictated how the doors operated. From a functional standpoint, the heavy gates were designed to open inward into the courtyard, pivoting toward the pillars of the entrance hall. This inward swing was a strict architectural necessity; had the gates opened outward, the massive doors would have obstructed the windows and blocked the doorways of the adjacent chambers [מלבי״ם].
