Ezra 7:10Sefaria

כִּ֤י עֶזְרָא֙ הֵכִ֣ין לְבָב֔וֹ לִדְרֹ֛שׁ אֶת־תּוֹרַ֥ת יְהֹוָ֖ה וְלַעֲשֹׂ֑ת וּלְלַמֵּ֥ד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל חֹ֥ק וּמִשְׁפָּֽט׃ {ס}

A leader's public achievements are often built upon a foundation of quiet, internal dedication. Ezra experienced a remarkable level of personal protection and guidance from God throughout his journey. This divine assistance was not a coincidence, but rather the direct result of his deep connection to the Torah and the intense spiritual preparation he undertook [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. By actively readying his own heart and mind, he laid the essential groundwork for his mission [שטיינזלץ].

This internal preparation was focused on three primary objectives [מלבי״ם]. The first was a personal commitment to investigate and truly understand God's teachings. Ezra dedicated himself to exploring the depths of the Torah to gain a clear, personal comprehension of its wisdom [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ].

The second objective moved beyond intellectual pursuit into the realm of action. He intended to practically apply and live out everything he had learned, recognizing that actual practice is the ultimate purpose of study [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. Offering a unique perspective on this active commitment, another approach suggests that his actions were directed outward toward others. In this view, much like Abraham in his time, Ezra actively worked to convert people and bring them closer to God [ר׳ סעדיה גאון].

The final objective was to share his knowledge as the spiritual leader of his generation. Ezra took on the heavy responsibility of teaching the rest of the nation and establishing necessary guidelines for the people [שטיינזלץ]. This comprehensive education included not only the written laws but also the rich traditions of the Oral Torah [מלבי״ם].
