Following a generous contribution from the king and his advisors for the needs of the Temple, a practical question emerges regarding the surplus funds. The royal gift was simply too vast to be spent entirely on the sacrifices alone [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This creates a need to determine how to properly handle the leftover silver and gold.

Rather than dictating exactly how the rest of the money should be spent, the king grants Ezra and his fellow leaders the authority to decide. The primary approach among commentators is that the king entrusts the practical decision-making entirely to the Jewish leadership, allowing them to use the funds in whatever way seems right and proper to them.

However, this freedom comes with a clear guiding principle. The king specifies that the surplus must be used to fulfill the will of God. The remaining funds are not for personal use, but must be dedicated strictly to worthy causes and religious duties that align perfectly with His desires.
