Ezra 7:6Sefaria

ה֤וּא עֶזְרָא֙ עָלָ֣ה מִבָּבֶ֔ל וְהֽוּא־סֹפֵ֤ר מָהִיר֙ בְּתוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּתֶּן־ל֣וֹ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ כְּיַד־יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהָיו֙ עָלָ֔יו כֹּ֖ל בַּקָּשָׁתֽוֹ׃ {פ}

The journey back to the Land of Israel marks a major turning point in history, establishing the Torah as the absolute center of national life. Earlier leaders, such as Zerubbabel and Joshua the High Priest, had successfully rebuilt the Temple and restored the system of sacrifices. Following their groundwork, Ezra, who is identified in tradition as the prophet Malachi [רש״י], traveled to the land with a specific mission to build up and secure the study of Torah among the people [מלבי״ם].

Ezra is known as a scribe, but this title means far more than someone who simply writes books. It describes a profound scholar and expert in the Torah, much like the modern role of a rabbi [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The root of his title relates to the actions of counting and telling [אבן עזרא]. In practice, Ezra had the unique ability to quickly sort through various explanations, weigh the evidence, and extract the precise truth and meaning behind God's commandments [רלב״ג]. He was an expert with a highly skilled and rapid mind, the exact opposite of someone who struggles to understand complex ideas [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To achieve his mission, Ezra needed royal support. The king, identified either as Darius [רש״י] or Artaxerxes [ביאור שטיינזלץ], viewed Ezra with deep respect as a holy and valued man. Consequently, the king granted Ezra everything he asked for to assist his journey. The true reason for this royal favor was that God's hand was upon him [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. This divine support provided Ezra with immense strength, power, and blessing [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It was this heavenly influence that made Ezra find favor in the eyes of the king [מצודת דוד] and enabled him to act exactly according to God's command [רש״י]. Above all, this success highlights God's direct, personal guidance over Ezra, guaranteeing that the Torah would never be forgotten by the people of Israel [מלבי״ם].
