פרשת מקץ

Genesis 41:5Sefaria

The ruler of Egypt finds no rest in the night, as one vision fades and another quickly takes its place. After a brief moment of waking, he is swept into a new scene. The setting shifts from the animal kingdom to the plant world, yet the underlying message remains unchanged and even grows clearer. The progression from cows, which represent the labor of plowing and sowing, to stalks of grain symbolizes the ultimate goal of the agricultural process—the harvest [מלבי״ם]. The brief awakening between the dreams is not accidental. It serves to separate the visions, granting each its own independent validity and meaning. Had they occurred as a single, continuous sequence, only the final portion would carry significance [חתם סופר]. At the same time, the repetition emphasizes that this is essentially a single vision repeating itself in different forms [כלי יקר].

To convey the extraordinary nature of the upcoming harvest, the imagery borrows concepts usually reserved for other domains. Descriptions typically used for the plumpness of animals or the thick water reeds of a marsh are applied to these stalks of grain. This illustrates the exceptional quality and robust health of the crops [רש״י, מזרחי, גור אריה, ביאור יש״ר]. The central focus of the dream is the highly unnatural sight of seven ears of grain sprouting from a single stem. Even during the most fertile years, a single stem naturally produces only two or three ears at most [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ordinarily, so many ears drawing from one source of nourishment would deplete the plant and diminish the quality of the crop. Yet, miraculously, they remain perfectly healthy and full, serving as a clear indicator of unprecedented agricultural wealth [חזקוני, רשב״ם].

The shared growth from a single stem carries deep symbolic weight. On a chronological level, it suggests that the coming years of plenty will follow one another in an unbroken, continuous sequence, with each year being entirely equal in the bounty it brings [כלי יקר, פענח רזא]. Beyond the timeline, the single stem also holds geographical and political meaning. It indicates that this immense wealth will not be scattered across various lands, but will be entirely concentrated in one location: Egypt. Furthermore, all of this agricultural wealth will eventually be gathered, preserved, and managed under the central authority of a single master and buyer, Pharaoh himself [העמק דבר, פרדס יוסף].
