Genesis 41:21Sefaria

When Pharaoh recounts his dream to Joseph, he does not settle for a dry repetition of the events. Instead, he adds a personal and dramatic touch, sharing the profound amazement that gripped him. He vividly describes how the skinny cows swallowed the fat ones, yet remained just as gaunt as before, with every single one of them looking entirely unchanged

These specific details, noting that the consumed cows vanished without a trace inside the thin ones and that the thin cows looked just as terrible as they did at the start, were absent from the original narrative of the dream. Commentators offer different perspectives on why Pharaoh includes them now. One approach suggests that Pharaoh is sharing a detail he just remembered or an internal sense of wonder he experienced while dreaming. While the original account simply reported the objective act of eating, Pharaoh now reveals his subjective shock that the skinny cows showed absolutely no physical change Alternatively, Pharaoh may be intentionally adding these details to clarify the dream for Joseph, following a common biblical pattern of keeping a story brief in one place while expanding on it in another based on the need of the moment Another perspective views this addition as a hint to a new element of the vision, suggesting that the impending famine will not be uniform across all regions [העמק דבר].

On a deeper level, the image of the cows eating without gaining any weight mirrors a cursed state of consuming food without ever feeling full or satisfied [ספורנו]. Ultimately, Pharaoh's added description proves critical, as it forms the very foundation of the solution Joseph is about to offer. Just as there was no visible sign that the fat cows had been eaten by the skinny ones, the upcoming years of great abundance will be completely swallowed up and forgotten due to the crushing weight of the famine that follows
