פרשת מקץ

Genesis 41:31Sefaria

The interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream reaches its climax as the disturbing images of the cows are translated into a harsh agricultural and economic reality. Joseph clarifies how the impending years of severe famine will completely erase any trace of the preceding era of abundance.

The primary approach among commentators is that the complete disappearance of the years of plenty serves as the direct meaning behind a specific detail in Pharaoh's dream. Just as the frail cows swallowed the healthy ones without showing any physical change, the years of famine will consume all the harvested produce of the good years, leaving absolutely no memory of the abundance behind. The devastating severity of the famine directly parallels Pharaoh's earlier statement that he had never seen such terrible animals in all the land of Egypt [מלבי״ם]. The fact that the plenty will go entirely unnoticed mirrors how the thin cows remained just as sickly in appearance as they were before they ate [אבן עזרא, מחוקקי יהודה, יהל אור]. Furthermore, the specific description that the abundance will simply not be known—rather than saying it would be forgotten—was deliberately chosen to create a precise match to Pharaoh's claim that the healthy cows vanished into the stomachs of the thin ones without being known [שפתי חכמים].

A close reading of the narrative reveals a slight gap regarding this detail. Pharaoh's vivid description of the healthy cows vanishing without a trace was spoken directly to Joseph, yet this specific point was absent from the original account of the dream earlier in the story. This is not an exaggeration or a falsehood on Pharaoh's part, but rather reflects the biblical style of condensing a narrative. The text hinted at this outcome earlier by noting that the cows remained ugly and thin, and Pharaoh was simply expanding upon this specific detail when recounting the experience to Joseph [משכיל לדוד].

While this explanation places these events during the actual famine, an alternative approach shifts the focus back to the era of abundance itself. According to this view, even during the peak of the prosperous years, the wealth and plenty will not truly be felt across the land. The cause of this is the paralyzing fear of the impending famine. Driven by deep anxiety over the future drought, the Egyptians will obsessively hoard and guard all their crops as a deposit for the difficult years ahead. As a result, no one will be able to truly enjoy the prosperity while it is actually happening [העמק דבר, מלבי״ם].
