This promised prosperity is not merely a description of the physical sensation of a person feeling full after eating [אבן עזרא, מחוקקי יהודה]. Instead, it represents a distinct historical period and an enduring national state of plenty [אבן עזרא, רשב״ם]. The scale of this agricultural wealth will be so vast that all the grain storehouses will be filled to the absolute brim [קיצור בעל הטורים].

The primary approach among commentators highlights a crucial geographic boundary to this prosperity. The years of plenty will occur strictly within the borders of Egypt, whereas the subsequent famine will strike the entire world [אור החיים, מלבי״ם, ביאור יש״ר]. Joseph deduced this geographic distinction directly from the details of the dreams. First, the healthy cows representing the years of plenty emerged from the Nile, the exclusive water source of Egypt. In contrast, the river was completely absent from the vision of the bad cows [מלבי״ם].

Second, the appearance of the bad cows was so severely thin and harsh that Joseph realized there would be no possibility of importing food from neighboring countries. This proved to him that the coming famine would be global, absolute, and inescapable, while the preceding abundance would be uniquely limited to Egypt [אור החיים].
