פרשת מקץ

Genesis 41:24Sefaria

Standing before Joseph, the Egyptian ruler recounts the profoundly disturbing climax of his nighttime visions, expressing his deep frustration over his advisors' failure to provide a proper explanation. As he describes the thin ears of grain swallowing the healthy ones, he unknowingly hints at a deeper reality he does not fully grasp. His description subtly suggests that the impending years of famine will not be consecutive, and that ultimately, the bad ears of grain will themselves be swallowed up [שפתי כהן].

In recounting his desperate search for answers, Pharaoh specifically emphasizes that he presented his problem to the magicians, deliberately omitting the ordinary wise men he had consulted earlier. This omission is intentional, meant to convey his immense surprise to Joseph. While it is understandable that standard wise men might fail to grasp the complex details of the visions, the magicians—experts who deal in sorcery—should have easily known the solution. Their complete failure leaves Pharaoh deeply puzzled [העמק דבר].

He complains that no one can solve this riddle for him [שד״ל]. His total rejection of his advisors' answers stems from their fundamentally flawed approach. The magicians treated the visions as two entirely separate dreams, attempting to assign different meanings to each event. Pharaoh's own intuition, however, told him otherwise; he sensed deeply that the visions formed a single, unified message [ספורנו, ביאור יש״ר]. Disappointed by these fragmented and incorrect interpretations, Pharaoh now shifts his focus entirely to Joseph, waiting with tense anticipation for the young man to finally provide the complete and satisfying answer he has been seeking [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
