Bringing the Ark of the Covenant into the Holy of Holies within Solomon's Temple marks its arrival at a permanent resting place. Inside this sacred space, the Ark is positioned beneath the expansive, spread wings of large cherubim, creating a protective canopy over the sacred chest and its carrying poles.
These towering figures are not the original cherubim crafted by Moses, which remained permanently attached to the cover of the Ark. Rather, they are new structures made by Solomon, standing on their own feet directly on the floor of the inner room [רש״י]. They were carefully designed and positioned in advance so their wings would reach perfectly over the specific spot designated for the Ark. As a result, the moment the Ark was brought into the room, the wings naturally sheltered it [מצודת דוד].
The protective span of the wings covered both the Ark and its poles from above. This arrangement worked seamlessly because the carrying poles extended outward toward the east, allowing the Ark itself to rest directly beneath the cherubim without the poles causing any obstruction. While the wings shielded the Ark and the inner sections of the poles, they did not cover the full eastward length of the poles [רש״י].
The exact placement of the Ark and its extending poles involves different historical traditions. One perspective suggests that as the priests brought the Ark inside, they were unable to reach the western wall because a cloud representing God's presence suddenly filled the Temple, causing the poles to remain protruding. A contrasting tradition proposes that the craftsmen intentionally extended the poles so they would stretch entirely across the room, touching both walls. However, this second view presents a logical challenge, as it makes it difficult to understand how the cherubim could effectively spread their wings to cover the Ark in such a widely extended configuration [רש״י].
