II Kings 10:15Sefaria

On the road to avenge God against the corrupt house of Ahab, Jehu encounters Jehonadab the son of Rechab. Jehonadab was a highly respected man known for his deep loyalty to God. Because he had kept himself entirely separate from the political affairs of Ahab's royal court, Jehu actively seeks out his moral backing for the mission ahead

The encounter begins with Jehu warmly greeting Jehonadab and offering him a blessing of peace Wanting to ensure they are fully united in purpose, Jehu asks if Jehonadab's heart is as true and aligned with him as his own heart is with Jehonadab. The primary approach among commentators is that Jehu is asking for total, unhesitating support for his actions, offering his own genuine friendship in return.

Jehonadab responds with a firm, repeated affirmation. This repetition serves to emphasize his absolute, unwavering support Another perspective suggests that the double phrasing reflects a profound mutuality between the two men; just as their hearts are united in purpose, their feelings naturally reflect one another [חומת אנך].

Following this declaration of loyalty, a hand is offered to bring Jehonadab into the chariot, though there are different views on who initiates this gesture. One approach suggests that Jehonadab asks Jehu to reach out and pull him up [רש״י]. Conversely, others maintain that Jehu is the one speaking. In this view, Jehu asks for Jehonadab's hand either as a practical way to help him aboard or as a symbolic gesture to seal a covenant of love and partnership A unique interpretation even proposes that Jehu confirms Jehonadab's loyalty by stating that if his support is indeed genuine, he should offer his hand [רד״ק].

Ultimately, the alliance is sealed. Jehonadab takes his place in the chariot, and the two men travel together to Samaria to complete the eradication of the remaining members of Ahab's household [אברבנאל].
