II Kings 10:18Sefaria

After completing the execution of the royal family, Jehu sets his sights on wiping out the priests and followers of Baal. Because it was difficult to clearly identify every person who participated in this worship, he devises a cunning strategy to gather them all into a single location.

To execute his plan, Jehu addresses the people with a calculated deception. He claims that his predecessor, Ahab, only engaged with Baal on a superficial and minimal level. Ahab's involvement was largely an effort to please his wife, who viewed the worship as a standard cultural practice rather than a matter of deep faith [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Jehu suggests to the public that Ahab's lack of true devotion was exactly why his royal house suffered destruction and tragedy.

Presenting himself as the one to correct this supposed failure, Jehu publicly commits to taking the worship of Baal much more seriously. He promises to serve the idol with deep dedication and consistency. This bold declaration is entirely a trap, designed to lure the idolaters out of hiding and draw them together so they can be eliminated.

Even though this promise is a complete lie intended solely to destroy idolatry, the spiritual implications of actually speaking such words are a matter of debate. Some point out that the sages criticized Jehu for verbalizing a commitment to idol worship. This critique stems from the idea that a covenant is made with the lips, meaning words possess an inherent power and influence even when spoken deceptively [אברבנאל]. Conversely, another perspective maintains that because Jehu's heart was completely removed from the idolatrous practice and his statement was nothing more than a calculated trick, his words carry no spiritual flaw [חומת אנך].
