As part of a massive effort to eradicate idol worship, Jehu's men clear the pagan temple of its ritual items to ensure their absolute destruction. The focus of this purge centers on the monuments dedicated to Baal. Because these objects were ultimately destroyed by fire, it is clear that they were not made of stone, but rather carved from wood. These wooden pillars originally stood in a ring around the pagan temple [מלבי״ם].

The destruction of these idols was not a careless or rushed affair. The men carried out the purge with extreme care and thoroughness. Instead of simply tossing the entire collection of monuments into a single massive bonfire, they made sure to burn each individual wooden monument separately, one by one, ensuring that absolutely no trace of the idolatry remained [רד״ק, מצודת ציון].
