שמואל ב, פרק ז׳, פסוק כ״ה

II Samuel 7:25Sefaria

Faced with a monumental divine promise, David realizes that the greatest thing he can desire is simply for God's word to come true exactly as stated. He recognizes that he cannot ask for anything beyond the complete fulfillment of the prophecy he has just received [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His prayer centers on transforming this promise into an eternal and irreversible reality, asking that the royal leadership of Israel remain with his descendants forever [מצודת דוד].

However, beneath this plea lies a natural human fear regarding the future. David worries that the future sins of his descendants might sever the royal line. By asking God to act exactly as He promised, David relies on a specific earlier assurance: if his descendants sin, God will indeed rebuke and punish them, but He will never remove His kindness or the kingdom from them [מלבי"ם].

On a deeper level, the timeline of the royal dynasty is divided into three distinct periods: the era of David and Solomon, the era from Solomon until the Messiah, and the days of the Messiah itself. The original promise given regarding Solomon was absolute; even if he were to sin, the kingdom would not be torn away from him as it was from Saul. In contrast, the promise concerning the generations that would follow Solomon was conditional, depending entirely on their observance of the covenant and the Torah. David therefore prays to bridge these different periods. He asks that the unconditional kindness promised to Solomon be extended to all subsequent generations leading up to the era of the Messiah. His ultimate plea is that even if his future descendants fail and sin, God will fulfill His word by disciplining them with human hardships, but without ever taking the kingship away from his family [אלשיך].
