I Chronicles 22:5Sefaria

King David faced a monumental challenge as he envisioned the construction of the Temple. He recognized a profound gap between the massive scale of the project and the capabilities of his son, Solomon, who was chosen to build it. Solomon was still in a highly vulnerable and formative stage of life. The primary approach among commentators is that he was simply very young. While a person might sometimes be referred to as a youth even in full adulthood—much like other leaders who were called youths in their early forties—Solomon was a literal child, merely twelve years old when he assumed the throne [רש"י]. Beyond his young age, he possessed a notably gentle and delicate character [מלבי"ם], having been raised in a pampered environment and accustomed to a life of physical comfort [מצודת דוד].

Standing in stark contrast to Solomon's tender youth was the awe-inspiring destiny of the Temple itself. Because the structure was to be built for God, it had to be breathtakingly vast and magnificent to accurately reflect His supreme and awesome greatness [מלבי"ם]. In a physical sense, this meant elevating the building to extraordinary proportions, pushing the architecture to a towering height of one hundred and twenty cubits [רש"י].

This immense scale also held deep spiritual significance. The physical elevation of the Temple mirrored a spiritual elevation of human thought and intellect, meant to unify God's name and draw a continuous flow of blessing down into the earthly realm [חומת אנך]. The ultimate purpose behind this unmatched splendor was to ensure the Temple would become famous across the globe. By standing as a beacon of unprecedented beauty, it was designed to inspire all nations and guide humanity toward the service of God [רלב"ג].

Understanding the sheer magnitude of both the physical and spiritual goals, David knew that his young son could not immediately assume full control and erect such a colossal structure on his own [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To ensure the project's success, David made a strategic decision to prepare the necessary infrastructure while he was still alive. By gathering the building materials and laying the groundwork in advance, he sought to ease the heavy burden of the labor, paving the way for his son to fulfill this divine mission [מצודת דוד].
