I Kings 4:20Sefaria

The era of King Solomon ushered in a golden age of absolute peace, demographic growth, and economic prosperity for the nation. After long periods of struggle, the people finally lived without the threat of war or the fear of enemies, allowing them to settle securely and multiply [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The population expanded to such an enormous scale that it was compared to the vast sand on the seashore [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. This sudden demographic boom was especially remarkable because just one generation earlier, during the reign of King David, the nation had suffered a devastating plague. Through the grace of God, they were now granted an immense blessing in their children, their livestock, and their land [רד״ק, חומת אנך].

This extraordinary growth was not limited to physical numbers. Because the people followed the will of God, they achieved a high spiritual quality where each person held the significance of many individuals. Their expansion was a dual blessing of both sheer quantity and spiritual greatness [חומת אנך]. The economic abundance of the time allowed the people to eat, drink, and live in happiness. The national wealth was so vast that the heavy cost of maintaining King Solomon's royal court, which required feeding tens of thousands of people every day, was easily absorbed and did not burden the citizens [מלבי״ם]. Importantly, this celebration of life did not devolve into materialistic revelry. While the people enjoyed their food and drink normally, their genuine joy stemmed from serving God rather than from empty indulgence [חומת אנך].

At the same time, this era of unprecedented blessing required careful government organization. The rapidly growing population, the frequent festive meals, and the constant influx of visitors traveling from across the empire to serve the king created a significant risk of food inflation. To manage this demand, a special commissioner was appointed over the food supply. His role was to regulate the local economy and prevent the cost of living from rising in the city markets, ensuring that the nation's prosperity remained stable [אברבנאל].
