The Philistines launch a sudden strike against Keilah, a city in Judah, focusing their assault on its agricultural hubs. Behind the scenes of this violent raid lies a deliberate divine purpose. God orchestrated this crisis to provide David with an opportunity to fulfill the commandment of saving his fellow Israelites. By stepping forward to rescue the city, David would ultimately secure divine providence and protection for himself [אלשיך].

The nature of the attack indicates that the Philistines are not engaged in a full-scale military campaign. Rather than laying a formal siege to breach and conquer the city walls, a band of raiders has simply infiltrated the city limits to terrorize and fight the local population [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Regarding the actions of the invaders at the threshing floors, the primary approach among commentators is that they are actively looting. Because the city likely lacks substantial material wealth, the raiding party targets the harvested grain [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective, however, draws a sharp line between theft and pure vandalism. While a thief steals for personal benefit, these attackers are driven solely by the desire to cause ruin.
