At a moment of immense danger, God's direct and personal intervention is revealed to protect those He loves, saving David at the very last possible second [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג]. Just as Saul is on the brink of capturing David and his men, a messenger arrives with urgent news. The identity of this messenger is understood in different ways. The natural approach views him as a human runner who reached Saul just in time to interrupt the pursuit [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that an actual angel descended from heaven to rescue David [רש״י]. The singular focus of this heavenly messenger's arrival was to deliver one crucial statement meant to fulfill the prophecy of Samuel. The promise that David would one day become king was in extreme jeopardy, and the intervention ensured that this decree would stand [חומת אנך].

The messenger urges Saul to return immediately. A sudden crisis has erupted because the Philistines have invaded the land [ביאור שטיינזלץ], spreading out and scattering across the territory in a full-scale military assault [מצודת ציון]. This pressing national emergency forces Saul to abandon his chase, drawing him away and securing David's survival.
