A desperate pursuit reaches its breaking point, with the hunter and the hunted separated by a single physical barrier. The two camps find themselves dangerously close to one another, divided only by a mountain described as a massive rock. Saul and his forces stand on one side, while David and his men are trapped on the other [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In this terrifying situation, David acts with extreme urgency and panic, rushing to escape Saul's grasp as fast as humanly possible [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The immense pressure and the feeling of having no escape take a severe toll on David. According to a Midrashic tradition [רד״ק], this moment of profound anxiety leads David to briefly doubt the prophecy he received from the prophet Samuel, who promised he would one day be king. Believing his capture is imminent and certain, David thinks in his heart that all men are liars, including Samuel. In direct response to this moment of doubt, God orchestrates David's immediate rescue through the sudden arrival of a messenger, proving that Samuel's words are entirely true and faithful.

Realizing that David is attempting a frantic escape, Saul shifts his strategy. He splits his forces to surround the mountain from both sides, closing in on David and his men in a tight, inescapable circle. The commentators note that this military maneuver is much like placing a crown on a head, wrapping completely around its target from every direction [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. The sole purpose of this total encirclement is to seize David and his men by brute force [מצודת ציון]. The trap is completely shut, leaving David and his followers besieged and entirely helpless. They are just a single moment away from capture, saved only by the surprising intervention that finally forces Saul to retreat [רד״ק].
