In response to the imminent threat, David made a strategic move involving a prominent rock. Commentators offer differing perspectives on the nature of this maneuver. One approach suggests that David was initially staying in an exposed, flat plain where he was easily visible, prompting him to seek refuge on a large mountain [מלבי״ם]. According to this view, the description of David descending to the rock indicates that he first had to climb down into a valley separating him from the mountain, and only then ascend to fortify himself against Saul's forces [רד״ק].
