After saving the city of Keilah from the Philistines, David discovers that the very people he rescued intend to hand him over to Saul. Knowing that Saul is planning an attack, David is forced to flee the city. The nature of their departure was marked by constant motion and uncertainty. The primary approach among commentators is that David and his men resumed their wandering without any predefined destination, moving randomly to wherever they happened to end up [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. This aimless movement was actually a deliberate tactic. By refusing to settle in one location, shifting constantly, and even doubling back to places they had already been, they aimed to confuse Saul and make it impossible for him to track them [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that their movement was not entirely random, but rather an active search for a secure location where they could find proper shelter and safety [רש״י, רד״ק].

Ultimately, David's sudden escape and unpredictable movements achieved their goal. Realizing that he would not be able to pinpoint David's location, Saul held back and completely canceled his planned pursuit [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
