I Samuel 23:22Sefaria

The pursuit of a highly skilled fugitive requires more than just enthusiasm; it demands exact intelligence. King Saul is locked in a relentless chase, displaying deep suspicion and calculated caution. He understands that his opponent is elusive and sophisticated, prompting him to refuse any reliance on vague assumptions. He directs his allies from Ziph to prepare thoroughly and gather concrete, well-founded intelligence Knowing the general region where David is hiding is simply not enough; his exact location must be pinpointed [רד"ק, שטיינזלץ].

Saul is deeply concerned about being drawn into a fruitless pursuit. He knows David is capable of creating diversions, perhaps revealing himself in one area to pull the search party away while he escapes to another [מלבי"ם, אלשיך]. Because of this risk, Saul forbids his men from trusting mere rumors, guesswork, or informants who might secretly be allied with David. Instead, he insists on finding a completely reliable eyewitness who has seen David directly Furthermore, the scouts are tasked with doing more than just finding his current location. They must anticipate his next moves and carefully investigate all of his usual hiding places [אלשיך].

This demand for meticulous investigation stems from Saul's keen awareness of his target's extreme cunning. David is known to use clever tactics and constant movement to hide his tracks How Saul knows about this specific level of deception is a matter of discussion. One approach suggests that a spy or an advisor specifically warned the king about David's tricky methods Another perspective suggests that Saul simply deduced this on his own, relying on his personal intuition [רלב"ג]. However, a primary approach offers a more personal connection: Saul is recalling David's own words. In the past, when David served under Saul's command, the king would ask him how he managed to defeat the Philistines and escape unharmed. David would openly credit his success to cleverness and tactical deception. Now, Saul realizes that David is turning those exact same military strategies against him
