שמואל א, פרק ד׳, פסוק ה׳

I Samuel 4:5Sefaria

The arrival of the Ark of the Covenant at the battle camp sparked an intense and deafening reaction among the Israelites. Filled with a sudden surge of confidence, they believed the Ark's presence alone would guarantee their victory and save them from their enemies.

Some view this massive shout as a display of honor and respect for the arrival of the sacred Ark [מצודת דוד]. However, others see this reaction as a reflection of a deep flaw in the people's mindset. Instead of turning inward, repenting, and crying out to God for His help, the Israelites treated the Ark as a tactical device that would automatically secure their success, much like the miracles they experienced when first entering the land [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. They let out a premature cry of victory, relying entirely on physical presence rather than seeking God's favor.

This behavior stood in sharp contrast to how they were supposed to act. During the battle of Jericho, God explicitly commanded the people to remain completely silent until the very moment the walls collapsed. Only at the actual moment of triumph were they allowed to raise their voices. Now, rather than looking up to God in quiet, earnest prayer before the fight began, they celebrated and cheered long before any salvation had occurred [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].

The noise they made was so overwhelming that the surrounding area seemed to roar and shake [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While the earth appeared to tremble, this was not a literal earthquake. Rather, it is a dramatic exaggeration meant to capture the sheer magnitude of their shout, illustrating how the deafening sound echoed across the landscape and could be heard from far away [מצודת דוד].
