I Samuel 4:3Sefaria

Following a painful defeat on the battlefield, the Israelite leadership seeks a quick and absolute solution rather than engaging in honest soul-searching. This decision exposes a fundamentally flawed spiritual perspective.

The fighters return to the camp, rejoining the rest of the nation who had stayed behind and not participated in the actual combat [מצודת דוד]. There, the elders of the people are bewildered, questioning why God allowed them to be struck down before the Philistines. Their confusion reveals a profound lack of self-awareness, as they genuinely believed they were free of sin and considered themselves fully righteous In truth, their spiritual condition was incredibly low, with idol worship actively practiced among them. They resembled a terminally ill patient entirely numb to their own pain. The very fact that they failed to recognize their wrongdoings and made no effort to repent was precisely what ignited the anger of God [מלבי״ם].

Rather than correcting their behavior, the leaders propose a purely tactical fix by bringing the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh. Located about thirty kilometers from the battlefront, Shiloh housed the Ark, which the elders now treated as a tie-breaking weapon [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This action was both unusual and improper. While it was customary to bring a special, secondary ark containing the broken tablets into battle, this time they uprooted the primary Ark that held the complete, unbroken tablets [אלשיך].

They hoped that bringing the Ark into their midst would guarantee their salvation from their enemies. The logic behind this move was deeply problematic. The people assumed that God would be forced to protect the Ark of His covenant to preserve His own honor. By extension, as long as the Ark was physically present among them, He would save them from their enemies as well They viewed the Ark as an automatic defense mechanism, completely forgetting that the covenant it represented was never an end in itself. Instead, the Ark was meant to serve as a reminder to observe and fulfill the Commandments written on the tablets inside it [מלבי״ם].
