I Samuel 4:13Sefaria

In an atmosphere of heavy tension, the elderly leader waits for news from the battlefield. He positions himself near the city gate, right along the side of the road leading to the front lines, desperately hoping for updates The specific spot he chooses is a designated waiting area by the gate A subtle detail in the text hints at his physical state during this agonizing wait. One perspective suggests that his heart was pounding and striking heavily out of sheer terror [רד״ק]. Another approach links this detail directly to his blindness; unable to physically look down the road, he sat straining his ears, listening intently for the sound of footsteps striking the ground as a runner sprinted toward him [אלשיך].

The root of his intense anxiety reveals the depth of his devotion. The Ark of the Covenant was the most sacred, innermost holy vessel, and it had never before been taken out of its resting place [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In a profound display of piety, the elderly leader's overwhelming dread is not directed toward the fate of his nation or even the survival of his own sons who are fighting in the war. Instead, his consuming fear is entirely focused on the safety of the Ark of God [רלב״ג, אברבנאל].

Meanwhile, a tragic sequence of events unfolds as the messenger arrives from the battle. Instead of going directly to the nation's leader with the critical update, the runner enters the city first. This occurs because while the leader waits at the gate on one side of the town, the fleeing messenger circles around and enters the area from a completely different direction As a result, the devastating news of the military defeat is delivered first to the local residents. The sudden arrival of the runner and his grim report instantly sparks widespread chaos, causing the entire city to erupt in a massive, heartbroken wail of mourning
