Isaiah 40:12Sefaria

The creation of the universe unfolds through the lens of absolute precision, as though the entire world was measured and weighed using the delicate tools of a master craftsman. The primary approach among commentators is that this vivid imagery serves as a rhetorical response to nations or individuals who doubt God's ability to redeem the Israelites from exile. The logic is straightforward: if God created the universe from nothing, placing every element with exact measurements and weights, He certainly has the power to overcome human empires and fulfill His promises. Using physical concepts of measuring and weighing is an allegory, designed to make God's immense power tangible and understandable for human minds

This profound order is evident in the foundational elements of nature. God carefully limited the quantities of water, the heavens representing fire, and the earth, ensuring that no single element could overpower the others and destroy the world [אברבנאל]. The physical landscape itself was shaped with perfect equilibrium so that the earth would not collapse [מלבי״ם]. Mountains and hills were distributed with intentional order, ensuring the land is neither entirely flat nor one massive mountain range [אברבנאל]. To maintain this stability, heavy mountains were placed upon hard ground, while lighter hills were set upon softer soil [רש״י].

God is the sole architect who knows the exact depth, width, and weight of every part of creation To illustrate this careful calculation, the imagery relies on familiar units of measurement. The vast oceans are described as being measured by a mere handful or a footstep [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, שד״ל, מצודת ציון, רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ], while the immense heavens are gauged by a hand span, the simple distance between a thumb and a pinky finger [מצודת ציון, שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God determined the exact volume of the earth using precise measuring vessels This careful division is also reflected in the earth's layout, which is split into perfect thirds consisting of deserts, human settlements, and bodies of water Finally, the massive mountains and hills were weighed out on precise iron scales and balances [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא], proving that every aspect of reality was defined and restricted with absolute exactness [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, שד״ל].
