Isaiah 40:22Sefaria

Looking at the vast structure of the universe and the smallness of humanity naturally reveals God’s infinite greatness. He leads the world from a supreme position, establishing the boundaries of time and space while using the heavens as a protective cover for all living creatures.

God is portrayed as sitting above the circle of the earth, a metaphor illustrating His absolute control over the world. The primary approach among commentators is that this circular imagery is derived from the action of a drawing compass, which creates a ring around a central point. In this view, the earth serves as the center, completely surrounded by the circle of the heavens. Interestingly, some note that this serves as an early indication that the earth is round rather than square [אבן עזרא]. The description of God sitting is not meant to be taken physically, as His glory fills the entire world and He occupies no defined space. Instead, it is a metaphor expressing how He establishes and sustains the earth from high above

From this incredibly elevated position, the inhabitants of the earth appear as grasshoppers. Commentators generally agree that this is a metaphor about perspective. Just as a person looking down from a great height sees the objects below as tiny, human beings appear as small grasshoppers or flies in relation to God's exalted place and immense greatness

The creation of the heavens is compared to the unfolding of a thin membrane or canopy God spreads out the sky just as one pulls and stretches the canvas of a tent The specific purpose of this cosmic tent is for dwelling. It ensures that all creatures can live safely under the protective roof of the heavens

When bringing these ideas together, a fascinating dual picture emerges regarding how humanity perceives God. On one hand, He is understood as distant and elevated far above the circle of the heavens, a place from which people look as small as grasshoppers. On the other hand, He is seen as a King who camps and dwells directly among His people, having stretched out the heavens like a thin tent so that He might sit together with them under His care [מלבי״ם].
