Isaiah 40:8Sefaria

יָבֵ֥שׁ חָצִ֖יר נָ֣בֵֽל צִ֑יץ וּדְבַר־אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יָק֥וּם לְעוֹלָֽם׃ {ס}

A sharp contrast exists between the temporary nature of human life and the eternal reality of the divine promise. Generations of people, along with all their deeds, eventually pass away and vanish from the world, while only the promise of God remains stable and impossible to cancel To reinforce and highlight this message, familiar imagery of plant life is repeated to paint a vivid picture of human fragility [רד״ק].

Human life is compared to vegetation that inevitably perishes, but this happens in different ways. On one hand, life is like grass that naturally dries up at the end of its lifespan [שד״ל]. This drying represents a natural conclusion at the end of a season, where something finishes its short time and dries quickly, but does so exactly at its proper time [מלבי״ם]. On the other hand, life is also compared to a fading flower. Fading expresses an early loss of strength, symbolizing something that wilts and withers before its time, even while it is still budding [מלבי״ם]. Together, these images show that human beings ultimately perish, whether their lives end naturally or their strength is cut off suddenly

Standing in direct opposition to this human weakness is the divine promise, specifically the promises delivered to Israel by the prophets of God Unlike human beings who lack strength and permanence, the word of God contains the two essential conditions required for absolute certainty: power and endurance [מלבי״ם]. It stands firm, moving from potential into concrete reality, with absolutely nothing capable of holding it back [שד״ל, אבן עזרא]. Because this word is eternal, even if countless generations pass away without living to see salvation, the promise of God will inevitably come true and can never be undone
