The absolute gap between the Creator and the created is so vast that God remains entirely beyond human understanding. Any attempt to limit Him or compare Him to something in the physical or conceptual world is completely useless. The human mind is challenged with a sharp question regarding this divide, emphasizing that the Creator is elevated above all things.
The primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a rebuke to the nations and to anyone doubting divine providence. Some mistakenly assume that because pagan idols are powerless to help, God might also lack power. The response makes it clear that God cannot be compared in any way to man-made objects [רד״ק, שד״ל, אברבנאל]. This criticism also targets those who foolishly try to understand God as a limited, physical force. Even if someone tries to imagine God as a supreme physical entity, an angel, or a celestial sphere, and creates a statue to represent it, the effort is absurd. God is an unlimited, supreme intellect, meaning no image can ever be applied to Him [מלבי״ם].
The impossibility of comparing anything to God is broken down into two distinct categories: physical traits and practical value. Just as two coins might share the same shape but hold different values, or hold the same value but look completely different, idols fail on both fronts. They share no physical form with God, nor do they possess any comparable value or usefulness, as they offer no help to those who worship them [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective highlights the absurdity of trying to place or arrange any object next to God and claiming it is His equal [שד״ל]. The idea of a likeness here extends far beyond a physical statue; it includes any conceptual similarity whatsoever [מצודת ציון, שד״ל].
On a philosophical level, idol worshippers historically crafted statues from various materials to represent hierarchies of heavenly powers. However, all these created forces are complex and vulnerable to change and ruin. While it is possible to create shapes that parallel forces of nature, it is impossible to find any form that matches the absolute, flawless God [אברבנאל]. Any attempt to compare human nature or the stars to God is destined to fail, because all material creations will eventually break and fade away, whereas the Creator is eternal [אהבת יהונתן]. Ultimately, because God is so completely separated from everything He created, it is fundamentally impossible to assign Him any shape, figure, or value [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
