The nations of the world, despite their perceived might and influence, hold absolutely no weight when compared to the infinite power of God. This reality stands in sharp contrast to the pagan idols worshiped by these nations. While foreign gods are merely man-made objects crafted from wood, silver, and gold that are completely incapable of offering protection, God is entirely incomparable, rendering the nations utterly powerless before Him [צאינה וראינה].
The primary approach among commentators is that the nations are regarded as completely non-existent and hold no importance in God's eyes. They are entirely devoid of substance, representing an absolute void [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In fact, their standing is so diminished that they are considered to be even less than nothing [רד"ק, אבן עזרא, שד"ל].
This profound insignificance can be understood from two distinct perspectives. From a relative standpoint, the nations are entirely meaningless the moment they are measured against God. At the same time, from an absolute standpoint, they lack any real substance even when evaluated entirely on their own. Because they hold no true reality, God does not alter His actions or the way He guides the world for their sake [מלבי"ם]. Furthermore, this inherent lack of importance serves as evidence of the fundamental lowliness of the human condition. It directly challenges the perspective that human beings possess a higher honor and greater significance than God's angels [אבן עזרא].
