ישעיהו, פרק מ׳, פסוק כ״ה

Isaiah 40:25Sefaria

וְאֶל־מִ֥י תְדַמְּי֖וּנִי וְאֶשְׁוֶ֑ה יֹאמַ֖ר קָדֽוֹשׁ׃

The Creator challenges the limits of human perception, shattering any attempt to define the Divine in physical terms. God poses a piercing rhetorical question to idolaters, highlighting the complete pointlessness of comparing Him to anyone else. This futility applies even when considering the most powerful and respected human leaders and judges, whom He could destroy in a fraction of a second [אבן עזרא].

The primary approach among commentators is that this challenge highlights the absolute gap between God and His creations. A fine distinction exists between forming a mental comparison and finding a true equal. A comparison might only be partial or metaphorical, while being equal implies having exactly identical traits. God makes it clear that He cannot be partially compared to anything, and He certainly has no absolute equal [מלבי״ם]. Because God holds all power in existence, there is simply nothing that can match Him [מצודת דוד].

Taking a deeper approach, human minds are naturally limited. People tend to process infinite ideas through concrete, physical concepts like space, movement, and physical bodies. Although the Bible occasionally uses physical metaphors to describe God, this is done solely to make these vast ideas easier for the human mind to grasp. In absolute truth, God is entirely separate from all physical matter and human imagination. Even if a person tries to invent a comparison using their imagination or words, God remains completely unaffected. He stands alone, completely beyond human understanding as the Creator of the entire world [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].

God is ultimately described as holy, a title that appears frequently throughout the book of Isaiah [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In this context, the concept carries a dual meaning. First, God is holy because He is the master of all thoughts [רד״ק]. Second, His very essence is completely separated and elevated above everything else. This holiness signifies that He is so far removed from the physical world that it is impossible to compare Him to any of His creations, let alone to lifeless statues carved by human hands [אבן עזרא].
