וְאוֹתִ֗י י֥וֹם יוֹם֙ יִדְרֹשׁ֔וּן וְדַ֥עַת דְּרָכַ֖י יֶחְפָּצ֑וּן כְּג֞וֹי אֲשֶׁר־צְדָקָ֣ה עָשָׂ֗ה וּמִשְׁפַּ֤ט אֱלֹהָיו֙ לֹ֣א עָזָ֔ב יִשְׁאָל֙וּנִי֙ מִשְׁפְּטֵי־צֶ֔דֶק קִרְבַ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים יֶחְפָּצֽוּן׃

A profound tragedy unfolds when a society projects an impressive religious facade while harboring a hollow moral reality. The people wrap themselves in a cloak of outward righteousness, displaying what appears to be a deep spiritual thirst. The primary approach among commentators is that this daily seeking of God is entirely superficial. It takes the form of constant daily prayers [מצודת דוד, שד״ל] and endless visits to the sages, priests, and prophets to ask religious questions [רש״י, שטיינזלץ]. They present themselves as individuals anxious to perform the commandments and eager to walk in the ways of the Torah. However, this is merely lip service. Their inquiries lack any true intention in their hearts and never translate into actual practice [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. In fact, asking about the intricate details of the commandments without any intention of fulfilling them is not a merit at all; rather, it only doubles their sin [רד״ק].

Operating under a false sense of self-righteousness, the people behave as though they have perfectly fulfilled all their obligations. They act like a nation that has seamlessly completed both its active duties toward God and its basic requirements of justice toward fellow human beings, such as avoiding theft and wrongdoing [מלבי״ם]. From this misguided position, they have the audacity to demand a higher level of divine justice from God. They ask for a standard that goes beyond basic, dry laws, expecting treatment that is tailored to specific circumstances and operates beyond the strict letter of the law. At the same time, they demand extreme closeness to God, seeking the highest levels of holiness and piety. The absurdity of these requests forms the core of the prophetic critique. It is unthinkable that individuals who steal, extort, and abandon the most basic interpersonal decency would demand to be judged beyond the letter of the law or pretend to achieve elite spiritual heights [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective sheds light on their behavior during times of crisis, comparing their flawed reactions to those of pagan nations. Just as idol worshippers become angry, curse their deities, and question their own worship when their prayers go unanswered, these people fast and afflict themselves, only to complain when God does not respond immediately [נחל שורק]. They approach God with grievances, questioning why their fasting has gone unnoticed [שטיינזלץ]. In doing so, they completely ignore the fact that their daily lives are tainted by robbery and extortion. This moral corruption is the true reason their prayers are empty and ultimately rejected by God [רש״י].
