כִּ֤י מְאַסְפָיו֙ יֹאכְלֻ֔הוּ וְהִֽלְל֖וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֑ה וּמְקַבְּצָ֥יו יִשְׁתֻּ֖הוּ בְּחַצְר֥וֹת קׇדְשִֽׁי׃ {ס}

A vision of agricultural peace and security in the Land of Israel offers a profound promise for the future. Instead of hard work being lost or stolen by invading foreigners, the farmers who tend the land will finally be the ones to enjoy the fruits of their labor, doing so with a spirit of holiness and deep gratitude.

The message is built on two parallel promises regarding the harvest. The first focuses on grain, which is traditionally gathered from the fields and brought into the home [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. The second focuses on the grape harvest, which is collected to produce wine [מלבי״ם, שד״ל]. When the farmers consume their harvest, they will offer praise to God. On a basic level, this simply means thanking God for the abundant goodness He has provided [מצודת דוד]. However, many commentators uncover a deeper legal layer, viewing the harvest as a reference to the second tithe and the fruits of a tree's fourth year. Unlike other agricultural gifts that are given to the priests, these specific crops are kept and consumed by the owners themselves. Their consumption is naturally accompanied by expressions of praise, confession, and gratitude to God [רד״ק, שד״ל, צאינה וראינה].

A careful distinction is made between how the grain and the wine are celebrated. The praise for the grain refers to the standard blessing a person says after a meal eaten in their own home. In contrast, the wine, following the laws of a fourth-year vineyard, must be brought to a holy place to be consumed [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that this holy location refers to the city of Jerusalem. The entire area within the city walls is considered God's courtyard, making it the required location for consuming these holy tithes. The Israelites will drink their wine in their own homes within the holy city, experiencing a profound sense of joy and calm. This stands in stark contrast to the painful past, when foreigners would violently seize the harvest and drink it far away in their own lands [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
