ישעיהו, פרק ס״ד, פסוק ג׳

Isaiah 64:3Sefaria

Human history has no precedent for the magnitude of wonders God performs for those who believe in Him. A look at the past reveals His absolute uniqueness compared to any other belief system, while the future promises a reward so vast it lies beyond human comprehension. At the heart of this relationship is the act of waiting [מצודת ציון]. This is not merely a passive expectation, but an absolute, unwavering trust that God will fulfill His promises at the exact right time [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators views this through the lens of history, drawing a sharp contrast between the Israelites and the surrounding nations. Since the dawn of time, idol-worshipping societies have never witnessed or heard of miracles like those God performs for His people. There is no record of any other deity executing such acts of salvation for its followers. Furthermore, a fundamental difference exists in the nature of these divine actions. While idolaters often attribute acts of destruction and vengeance to their gods out of fear, God's wonders are rooted entirely in kindness, justice, and righteousness. Even when God administers punishment, it does not stem from cruelty. Instead, it is a guided effort to turn a person away from a harmful path, ultimately leading to their true benefit [שד״ל].

Reflecting on these historical events provides a powerful guarantee for the future. If God performed monumental miracles for earlier generations even when they were not actively anticipating them, it is certain that He will perform even greater wonders for a generation that genuinely waits for Him, believes in Him, and actively hopes for His salvation [מלבי״ם].

Alongside this historical perspective, another approach focuses not on a comparison of deities, but on a glimpse into the World to Come. In this view, the message is that no human eye, not even that of a prophet, has ever seen the immense reward God is preparing for those who wait for Him. While all the prophets received visions of the Messianic era, the true reality of the World to Come remains completely concealed. Only God Himself has seen and knows the radical, unfathomable transformation that awaits the believers [רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
