Idols are ultimately exposed as completely worthless and false creations doomed to destruction. They are nothing more than works of deception and empty imagination [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These objects are the handiwork of human beings who have wandered away from the path of reason and logic [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון].

Their ultimate fate is sealed for a specific time of reckoning. When God directs His attention to bring about judgment and disaster, these false gods will be entirely wiped out, leaving them with no hope of recovery [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. From a historical perspective, this final punishment aligns with the collapse of the Babylonian Empire [רד״ק]. When God orchestrated the downfall of Babylon at the hands of Media and Persia, the end came for their idols as well. Any illusion of their divine power was shattered, and their worship came to a complete stop. The idols themselves were simply smashed into fragments of silver and gold, eventually hauled away as plunder on the backs of pack animals.
