ירמיהו, פרק י׳, פסוק א׳

Jeremiah 10:1Sefaria

The prophet Jeremiah issues an urgent call to the Israelites, responding directly to a growing wave of resentment among the people. The people of Judah were frustrated, questioning why God would judge and punish them in the same way He punished the surrounding nations. They felt they should be exempt from such treatment because they carried the physical sign of the covenant through circumcision. Jeremiah delivers God's direct answer to these complaints [אברבנאל].

God clarifies that being set apart from the rest of the world requires much more than a physical mark. True separation demands completely rejecting the behaviors and idol worship of the surrounding cultures. During this period, the people tried to justify their idol worship by claiming they were simply afraid of the stars and the heavenly bodies that seemed to control the natural world. They believed that by worshipping idols, they could appease these cosmic forces.

God dismisses this logic as a fundamental mistake. While other nations might be subject to the natural order of the heavens and therefore fear cosmic signs and eclipses, the Israelites are entirely different. They exist under God's direct, personal care. Because they are guided by His immediate providence, they are not bound by the fate of the stars. Consequently, they have absolutely no reason to fear the heavens or to worship the forces within them [אברבנאל].
