Jeremiah 10:16Sefaria

לֹֽא־כְאֵ֜לֶּה חֵ֣לֶק יַעֲקֹ֗ב כִּֽי־יוֹצֵ֤ר הַכֹּל֙ ה֔וּא וְיִ֨שְׂרָאֵ֔ל שֵׁ֖בֶט נַחֲלָת֑וֹ יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמֽוֹ׃ {ס}

The profound contrast between the eternal Creator and the lifelessness of idols forms the foundation of Jewish faith. During the Babylonian exile, the prophet Jeremiah sent a message to the exiled elders of Israel who had been banished with King Jehoiachin. His goal was to arm them with a decisive response against the Chaldeans, should their captors attempt to lure them into idol worship [רד״ק]. There is a fundamental difference between man-made idols, which include the worship of stars, and the God of Israel. While idolaters believe their gods control only specific, limited domains, God is the architect of all reality [מלבי״ם]. He is not bound by the forces of nature because He created them.

This distinction directly shapes the ultimate destiny of nations. Other nations are guided by heavenly forces, and when those spiritual powers fade, the nations themselves perish. In contrast, the Israelites rely on the living, eternal God, ensuring that their future is forever secure [חומת אנך]. Even in the darkness of exile, God has not abandoned them. It was the people who turned away, yet God remains their eternal portion [רד״ק].

Because of this unique relationship, the Israelites are not subject to the whims of astrology or the zodiac; instead, they receive direct, personal guidance from God [מלבי״ם]. Within the nation, there are different spiritual levels. The identity of Jacob reflects the general masses or the ten northern tribes, while the identity of Israel represents a higher spiritual standing. This higher level points to the nation's great leaders or the tribe of Judah, where a greater degree of holiness and divine attention is revealed [מלבי״ם]. This chosen status extends to every distinct group within the nation, as each was specifically selected to be God's inheritance [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, this identity carries a promise of survival. Just as a branch is never entirely destroyed, the Israelites are guaranteed to endure because they are the inheritance of an eternal God [חומת אנך].

Ultimately, God is the absolute master and ruler over all forces, both in heaven and on earth. Because He controls every power in existence and directs them according to His will, He alone is worthy of worship. Therefore, the Israelites have no reason to submit to foreign nations or to fear the stars in the sky.
