ירמיהו, פרק נ׳, פסוק כ״ג

Jeremiah 50:23Sefaria

The sudden and dramatic fall of an invincible superpower evokes deep astonishment. A kingdom that once ruthlessly trampled all other nations suddenly finds itself completely shattered, leaving the surrounding world in a state of profound shock over its ruin.

Mighty Babylon operated like a massive, heavy mallet. The primary approach among commentators is that the empire acted as a rock-shattering hammer, systematically crushing, pounding, and smashing all the nations of the earth. The profound mystery is how such a terrifying and destructive force could suddenly be cut down and broken [מצודת ציון].

This historical reversal presents a double wonder [מלבי״ם]. The first point of bewilderment focuses on the shattering of Babylon's sheer military might. It is baffling to consider how the very nations that Babylon had previously scattered and broken into pieces managed to unite once again to wage war against it. The surrounding world wonders what happened to the mighty hammer that was supposed to smash any such alliance before it could even form.

The second point of astonishment relates to the aftermath of this destruction, as the empire was reduced to a state of absolute wasteland and bewilderment [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Babylon transformed into a focal point of shock for the surrounding nations, who look upon its ruin with complete amazement [מצודת דוד]. This collapse is especially baffling considering that numerous vast and powerful nations had always stood by Babylon, offering their constant aid and protection [מלבי״ם].
