The downfall of Babylon unfolds as a sudden and absolute collapse into a divine trap, serving as a direct punishment for its arrogance and desecration of the sacred. God prepared a hidden snare for the empire, catching it completely off guard. The disaster struck with absolute suddenness, leaving Babylon unaware of the lurking danger and unable to protect itself [מצודת דוד]. Had the nation been warned of the approaching catastrophe, its people might have attempted to flee and save themselves. Instead, blinded by ignorance, they remained exactly where they were [רד״ק].

Once caught in this hidden snare, Babylon was discovered by its enemies and seized with overwhelming force [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that it was not just the physical nation that was exposed, but rather that Babylon's hidden sins and iniquities were finally searched out and brought to light [רד״ק].

The root cause of this total destruction lies in Babylon's direct provocation of God, an act equivalent to inciting conflict and war [רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. This war against God took two distinct forms. First, Babylon slaughtered His people with extreme cruelty and a complete lack of mercy [מצודת דוד]. Second, they committed a profound act of desecration by removing the sacred vessels from the Temple and using them for their own feasts. In a precise act of divine justice, God responded measure for measure: just as Babylon emptied His holy place of its treasures, God opened His own heavenly armory, drawing out His weapons of wrath to wage war against the empire and reduce it to ruins [מלבי״ם].
