An invading army marches toward Babylon, standing as a terrifying and cruel force fully prepared for combat. The sheer sight and sound of this military power strike fear into those in its path. The warriors march with a firm, unyielding grip on their weapons [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They carry bows alongside another piece of combat gear, which may either be a defensive shield or an offensive spear used to strike down the enemy [רד״ק, מצודת ציון].

Beyond their weapons, the terror of this army is amplified by the massive noise it creates. The uproar of the advancing soldiers sounds like the roar of a raging sea tossed by storm winds [מצודת דוד]. The entire camp is highly organized and completely ready for the coming fight.

This intense state of readiness is understood in two distinct ways. The primary approach among commentators is that it focuses on the soldiers themselves, noting that every single fighter is heavily armed and equipped like a mighty warrior stepping out to face a rival [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this deep battle readiness might describe the animals rather than the men. In this view, the horses carrying the riders are so highly trained and prepared for combat that they function with the discipline of human soldiers [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the sole target of this massive, heavily armed force is Babylon [מצודת דוד].
